She Hulk done got married last issue, and Dan wanted to see the
newlyweds portrayed as the famous "American Gothic" couple. The
original painting by Grant Wood has fascinated art lovers for decades.
There seems to be some hidden tension in the painting-- the couple's
expressions seem like they are just holding back something...
desperation or seething hatred maybe? Its all pretty subtle stuff like
Mona Lisa's smile, but you get the idea that she'd like to gouge out his
eyes, and he'd love to ram that pitchfork right through her abdomen.
