| Elektra was Gregs first big project with Marvel and he really hit the ball out of the park. Elektra was showing up big-time in mainstream pop culture: Gregs artwork was displayed on MTVs TRL during an appearance by actress Jennifer Garner. Elektra illustrations were also featured in Stuff magazines "100 best things" article, an interview with Marvel Editor-in-chief Joe Quesada on "Hispanics Today", and she even accompanied a business article in USA Today! A few months later, Elektra scored a job with top modeling agency Karin Models as a virtual model. The following year, film director Mark Steven Johnson revealed that Horns paintings of Elektra were the inspiration for Jennifer Garners outfit in his movie adaptation of DAREDEVIL, and also the later spin-off film ELEKTRA. | |
| Gregs next big assignment was Emma Frost, also known as The White Queen. His work on this title was extremely popular and cemented him as one of the premiere cover artists in the comic industry. In 2004, the entertainment website IGN.com, held their Battle of the Comic Babes" competition. More than half a million fans voted to determine the hottest comic book character of all time, with Gregs sexy paintings of Emma Frost destroying all 64 entrants! Most recently, Greg is the regular cover artist on She-Hulk and Ms Marvel. | FAQ Why is Gregs website not www.greghorn.com ? Because somebody bought it a month before I was able to get my hands on it! The Judge part of my current website refers to my creator owned project I did at the time called J.U.D.G.E | |
| FAQ Who are your greatest influences? This is a very tough question because I have different influences from different periods in my life. When I first started noticing comic books, my favorite artists were John Byrne and George Perez (no surprise there), and those are the guys I learned my basics from. But, as I kept developing I started looking for a wider variety of techniques in the art of John Buscema, and Paul Gulacy. Once I felt comfortable with my basic drawing skills, I started becoming more conscious of other aspects of art like details, shading, and special effects... so I gravitated towards Adam Hughes, Michael Golden, and Kevin Nowland. At the time, Adam was working on Justice League and his characters expressions were like nothing ever seen in comics before-- his heroes had personality, by god! His girl's were super sexy too. Michael's art was really fantastic, but above all, his flair for special effects were simply jaw-dropping. Kevin inspired me with his finishing technique that was so tight and beautiful. Sometimes his cross-hatching looked like it was done by a machine! Above all, these three artists were awesome at lighting their figures, and really pioneered the technique of back-lighting/double lighting in comics. These days I am inspired by high detail painters like Haije Sorayama and Armando Huerta (who create the best pin-up art you've ever seen) and comic painters like Adi Granov (who is the artist for Marvel Comics' Iron Man and also art director for the Iron Man movie!) All of these guys art is extremely clean and excellently designed | |

NEWS ITEM 2007:
Greg Horn Inducted to Society of Illustrators This February, Greg Horn was inducted into the Society of Illustrators, along with Neal Adams, Michael Golden, and Basil Gogos. Boasting a membership that has included some of the greatest commercial artists of all time including Normal Rockwell, Maxfield Parrish, and Frederick Remington the Society recognizes and promotes the art of illustration.
Greg has been recognized for his work in the comics field, as one of the most identifiable cover artists in comics today, as well as for his advertising work. Regularly seen on Marvel Comics Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk, Greg has also produced the artwork for the Olympic Dream Team poster, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and a number of magazine covers and advertising campaigns. Seeing my painting of LeBron James towering over Times Square was unbelievable! commented Greg on one of his proudest moments to date.
Having produced over 60 covers in under a five-year period, Greg has no plans on slowing down. He recently worked on the redesign of the classic boardgame Stratego, provided the alternate cover to the first issue of Anita Blake, and is currently in the early stages of working on an overseas venture that stands to bring his work to a huge new market.
David H. Reuss, the Membership Chairman for the Society, explains why Greg was offered membership with such notable talents as Adams and Golden. [W]hat Greg is utilizing in the creation of his illustrations is to a large extent the same essential skills that Pyle, Wyeth and Rockwell would use in the creation of one of their own illustrations. Drawing, composition, color, and rendering technique is essential to all great illustration work and this is very apparent in Greg's illustration work.
Press Release 2006......
While best known for his ultra-sexy depictions of Marvel Comics bad girls Elektra and Emma Frost, artist Greg Horn has become highly sought after in many other illustration industries. In the past 4 years he has painted over 60 magazine covers and editorials, and has worked on more than 20 advertising campaigns. In celebration of New York Comicons inaugural event, Greg will be displaying some of his never before seen projects at his table in artist alley (booth AA46 &47).
Most recently completed is Gregs total redesign of the classic boardgame Stratego. Although a daunting task due to the inclusion of the playing pieces, this assignment was close to the artists heart.
The Stratego project had a great nostalgia factor for me. I used to play back when I was a kid .I remember surrounding a worthless scout with all the bombs, so my idiot friend would think the flag was there! Anyway, the old engraved playing pieces have since been replaced with illustrated stickers, so I got to paint every soldier rank from the spy to the marshals! Its awesome!!
Greg is known for his slick, high detailed paintings, and that came in handy when he was asked to also illustrate the packaging art for the game.
The ad agency got a hold of me for the same reason many art directors do. They need an illustration that is going to pop off the shelvessomething that will compete with video game art. These days, if you arent competing with video games, you arent competing at all! Luckily, I have a lot of experience working on game magazines, so I know exactly what they are looking for.
Also on display will be Gregs spot illustrations for Warner Bros/ DC comics upcoming movie Superman Returns, and his new ESPN poster of NBA star Lebron James.
The illustrations of Superman were a lot of fun to do, and since they are licensable images, theres no telling where they will pop up. This work has led to some great extra assignmentsa few months ago I got to do the box art for Mattels Superman Returns board game. Also with DC, Im just finishing a new Lebron James poster available only at ESPN Zone.
Horn is gaining experience in the sports illustration field and has already painted the basketball standout 3 other times for Nike, Powerade, and Allstate Insurance Company.
Currently, Greg Horn is the regular cover artist for Marvel Comics She Hulk. With writer Dan Slott at the helm, Greg gets to explore his humorous side yeah, She Hulk straddling a fence post in a cowgirl outfit, while a horse ogles her thats my kind of comedy!
Come see these and many other art works at his booth in artist alley (AA46 & AA47). If you cant wait for that, visit Gregs official website at www.greghornjudge.com
